This position is a Principal Investigator within the Wildlife and Ecosystems Branch at Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center. The scientist plans and conducts conservation-decision relevant research on migratory birds in North America, with an emphasis on migratory gamebirds. The investigations provide resource managers with information and tools to better understand and manage migratory bird populations and habitats. Along with conducting new field studies, the scientist will synthesize and analyze existing data to make population-level inferences on migratory birds at large spatial scales. The scientist will be expected to independently develop his/her research program toward fruitful directions on migratory birds and within a broad area of focus, utilizing and interfacing of a number of disciplines, such as: quantitative ecology, population biology, landscape ecology, avian ecology, adaptive management, decision support, data analytics, and statistics. It is anticipated that the scientist will need to use state-space and hierarchical spatio-temporal models to address conservation questions. The scientist identifies and outlines products and prepares scientific papers for publication in professional peer-reviewed journals and makes oral presentations at professional meetings. In addition, the scientist represents NPWRC and the USGS on technical committees focused on complex issues affecting migratory bird management and conservation or the habitats used by migratory birds. The scientist must be interested in collaborative research to address applied, conservation-relevant questions.
