    This position is located with the Quality, Safety, and Values Service at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System in Seattle, WA. The Health Physicist - Radiation Safety position is primarily responsible for serving as an independent subject matter expert for the Radiation Safety Program to ensure that safety is maintained, that policy is implemented, and that compliance with regulations is occurring. Ionizing and nonionizing radiation is employed in the acquisition of medical images.

    The incumbent serves as the Assistant Radiation Safety Officer/Health Physicist (ARSO) reporting directly to the Radiation Safety Officer, responsible for providing technical advice and guidance regarding the physical, mechanical, electrical, computer, automation, and radiation aspects of using ionizing and non-ionizing radiation within the services of: Gastroenterology; Cardiology; Surgical specialties (i.e. Operating room, Orthopedics, Vascular, Neurosurgery, and Urology); Research, Emergency Department, Operating Room, Diagnostic Imaging, Endoscopy, Speech Pathology; Pain Management; Dental; Radiology; Nuclear Medicine; and Radiation Oncology. The incumbent will support the continuous quality improvement of image OA/QC & minimizing radiation exposure and will serve as a point-of-contact for radioactive material that is governed by the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA); Materials Permit & Regulations in the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC); and Regulations Title 10 CFR Parts 19, 20, 35 and 49; NRC, VHA, Department of Transportation (DOT), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), etc.

    The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

    • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing. The Health Physicist must effectively and clearly communicate requirements to clinical and research personnel, provide training, and report to the RSO;
    • Knowledge of mathematics (the differential and integral calculus and differential equations, at least), physics, chemistry environmental, and biology sufficient to understand health protection standards, theories and practices;
    • Ability to understand interpret and apply current standards, guides and reports published by various concerned agencies and organizations (e.g., the International Commission in Radiological Protection; the National Council on Radiation Protection and measurements; the United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation; the National Academy of Sciences; National Research Council Advisory Committee on the Biological Effects of Ionizing Radiation; and the American National Standards Institute);
    • Knowledge of, or ability to, understand and apply applicable Codes of Federal Regulations (CFR), notably 10CFR and other NRC regulations, Regulatory guides, and NUREG series reports. Knowledge of these specific regulatory requirements is required to successfully implement the Radiation Safety Program;
    • Knowledge and ability sufficient to use the appropriate detectors and instruments for measuring and assaying radioactive materials used in the Program, and perform calibrations of those instruments. The Health Physicist manages the calibration segment for the Program;
    • Knowledge and ability sufficient to calculate the decay of radioisotopes;
    • Knowledge sufficient to calculate internal and external radiation patient does from diagnostic radiologic procedures;
    • Knowledge and ability to make decisions concerning such things as interpreting extensive data, planning the work, or refining the methods and techniques to be used to insure safe use of material/equipment covered under the facilities permit.
    • Knowledge of personnel monitoring devices and the ability to select the proper device for specific applications;
    • Knowledge of and ability to use DOT regulations and requirements relating to the transport of radioactive materials;
    • Knowledge and ability sufficient to recognize the potential for contamination associated with the use of radioactive materials, to control contamination, and to decontaminate equipment, facilities, and personnel;
    • Knowledge and ability sufficient to maintain and test sealed sources of radiation and devices in which the sources are to be used;
    • Knowledge or ability sufficient to conduct a bioassay program;
    • Knowledge of NRC/NHPP Broad Scope License.
    • Extensive knowledge of the underlying principles of x-ray producing devices and the methods for assessing the satisfactory performance of these systems.
    Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.
