- Serves as a Forestry Technician in a Bureau of Land Management office.
- Assists professional Foresters by gathering a variety of resource information.
- Prepares the forestry portion of Resource Management Planning documents.
- Assist's with other planning and environmental clearance documents; researches and drafts segments of those documents; may make limited recommendations relative to management practices.
- Performs timber sale reconnaissance and unit design for proposed timber sale tracts.
- Recognizes variations in timber stand conditions such as species composition, age classes, and silvicultural treatments in order to develop management prescriptions.
- Reads physical characteristics of terrain as they relate to logging systems and road systems
- Conducts 100 percent timber cruises or sample surveys to estimate volumes of timber for timber sales
- Conducts field surveys of timber sale boundaries, roads, and property lines. Uses field notes to plot property lines, read traverses, or timber sale maps.
- Compiles maps of forest and woodland areas, cutover areas, burned areas, and special use
- May be assigned to oversee the work of lower graded employees.

Physical Demands: The work ranges from sedentary when completing duties in the office to frequent field work requiring a considerable amount of walking, climbing, stooping, bending, and lifting.
Work Environment: Office work is performed in adequately lighted, heated, and air conditioned offices. Much of the time is spent in the field where exposure to extremes of heat and cold, rough and slippery terrain, wet weather, insects, snakes, dead falls and other hazards are common. The employee will carefully adhere to all safety procedures to mitigate hazards encountered.

GS-05: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-04 in the federal service. Specialized experience at this level is defined as experience working as a Forestry Technician with knowledge of principles of forest management sufficient to (as directed by the supervisor) perform the following:Collect and compile forest and woodland management data regarding location, size, character, extent, volume, rate of growth, and quality of timber. Collect forest inventory data from timber cruises, prepare timber sales, perform timber markings in forest development projects, road layout projects, and other work. Also to inspect and report on timber sale areas to determine compliance with contract requirements and to mark or otherwise designate timber to be removed in timber sales. Knowledge and ability to read and prepare maps, use a GPS and other instruments, and to operate two and four wheel drive vehicles and ATVs.
GS-06: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-05 in the federal service. Specialized experience at this level is defined as experience working as a Forestry Technician with knowledge of principles of forest management sufficient to (as directed by the supervisor) perform the following:Conduct segments of forest inventories, administer timber sale contracts, prepare forest road layouts, execute plans for slash disposal, forest plantings, thinning, and forest disease and insect control.
GS-07: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-06 in the federal service. Specialized experience at this level is defined as experience working as a Forestry Technician with knowledge of principles of forest management sufficient to (as directed by the supervisor) perform the following:Plan and conduct segments of forest inventories, administer timber sale contracts, prepare forest road layouts, execute plans for slash disposal, forest plantings, thinning, and forest disease and insect control. Perform timber sale reconnaissance and unit design for proposed timber sale tracts. Recognize variations in timber stand conditions such as species composition, age classes, and silvicultural treatments in order to develop management prescriptions. Read physical characteristics of terrain as they relate to logging systems and road systems. Conduct 100 percent timber cruises or sample surveys to estimate volumes of timber for timber sales or for forest stand inventory using accepted BLM cruising practices and sampling techniques, preparing data for entry into the automated systems. Secure growth and volume data on permanent sample plots and compiles statistics for computation of allowable cut determinations.
Substitution of Education for the Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-05, successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor’s degree (a) with major study in forestry, range management, agriculture, or a subject-matter field directly related to the position, or (b) that included at least 24 semester hours in any combination of courses such as those shown above for GS-04. No more than 6 semester hours in mathematics is creditable to clearly state your undergraduate/graduate degree(s) and submit your college transcripts or a listing of your college courses that includes hours and grades.
For GS-06: One year (18 semester hours) of graduate level college education related to range technician work such as a major study in forestry, range management, agriculture or a subject-matter field directly related to this position.
For GS-07: One year (18 semester hours) of graduate level college education in a field related to range work such as a major study in forestry, range management, agriculture or a field directly related to this position.
Education and experience may be combined to meet the specialized experience requirement.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

KSA 3: Ability to use GPS, GIS, clinometers, data recorders and other measuring equipment to aid in the layout and design of logging systems, roads, and harvest units.
