    This position is responsible for the directing and inspection of dairy plants, the grading of dairy and related food products nationwide within the National Field Office of the Dairy Grading Branch, Agricultural Marketing Service, Dairy Program.

    • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity. The duties may include, but are not limited to:
    • Evaluates operations by touring field locations to assess the adequacy of services to the needs of producers, processors, handlers and consumers.
    • Analyzes and evaluates proposed new or revised policies and procedures for practicability and adaptability to field operations.
    • Administers and manages resident grading programs, including any associated on-site laboratory services. Coordinates the scientific analysis of dairy product samples with the appropriate divisions.
    • Directs grading, inspection and sampling programs and operations at nationwide locations, and evaluates adequacy and efficiency of program operations.
    • Evaluates dairy plant operations, including the construction, equipment, sanitation and facilities.
    • Inspects and evaluates new equipment with regard to sanitary design or directs subordinate supervisors to make such evaluations.
    • Reviews applications for installation of plant inspection and grading service. Determines whether such applications will be approved and initiates contracts of agreement with firms for service.
    • Directs a nationwide workforce of Agricultural Commodity Graders as well as administrative support personnel located at the National Field Office.
    • Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the graders and the administrative staff through subordinate supervisors.
