- Conduct non-routine analytical studies in response to EPA's priorities;
- Lead a team of researchers in the analysis of environmental and biological samples;
- Serve as a senior scientist and technical authority;
- Manage extramural research projects related to in-house research support contract(s).
You will spend less than 25% of your work time on contracts, grants/cooperative agreements, and/or interagency agreements.

This position is designated as Moderate Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation.

In addition to the educational requirements, we are looking for at least one year of specialized experience related to this position as described below:
To qualify for the GS-13 level, you need to have at least one year of full time experience equivalent to the GS-12 level defined as conducting independent analytical research for emerging contaminants using targeted techniques; and communicating research results through presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
Your answers to the on-line assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas: 1) Knowledge of emerging contaminants; 2) Skill in interpreting scientific data; 3) Skill in written communication; 4) Ability to lead and train a team of researchers; 5) Skill in oral communication; 6) Ability to develop plans and program initiatives to support establishment of new scientific standards; 7) Skill in R-code program development; 8) Ability to manage contracts including preparing procurement requests and monitoring technical performance.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
You need a degree or combination of education and experience as described below to qualify for this position.
Chemist: You must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in one of the following: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics; OR You must have a combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
