As a Supervisory Chemist, you will:
- Direct the performance of a wide variety of chemical and special metal analyses. Set standard procedures and testing schedules which provide precise percentages of the elements present in (a) the incoming metals purchased from outside contractors, (b) in-house processed coins, (c) coin blanks received from outside contractors, (d) in-house processed ingots, and other manufacturing processes used at the West Point Mint, and chemical and physical analyses.
- Provide technical trouble shooting in response to problems which develop in the production cycle.
- Advise the Quality Manager regarding the solution of existing problems and steps which may be taken to head off problems before they develop.
- Establish and maintain sampling and testing procedures for the Mint's rotating inventory of coinage material.
- Direct the return to the supplier of metal which does not meet contractual specification.

For the GS-13, you must have one year specialized experience at the GS-12 level or equivalent in either a public/private sector position that is directly related to the position listed above and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:
-Performing a wide variety of chemical analysis utilizing modern chromatographic, spectroscopic, spectrometric or hyphenated analytical techniques; AND
-Developing conclusions, recommended actions, and quantitative analytical methods; AND
-Providing input and maintaining an effective quality control program.
Education Requirements: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that includes physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR
Combination of education and experience: course work equivalent to a major as shown in above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
