    The mission of OSHA is to develop and promulgate occupational safety and health standards, develop and issue regulations; conduct investigations and inspections to determine the status of compliance with safety and health standards and regulations; issue citations and proposes penalties for non-compliance with safety and health standards and regulations.

    Selection(s) can be made from any advertised grade level.

    This position is inside the bargaining unit. 

    A writing sample may be required during the interview.

    As an Industrial Hygienist, you will perform the following duties:


    • Participates as a member of an inspection team and assists in the planning, and conducts a limited segment of a major investigation. Identifies areas in need of immediate corrective action or conditions which are of imminent danger to life or limb.
    • Conducts research and studies records and files covering mishaps, injuries, and equipment maintenance data. Compiles and prepares a variety of recurring reports as directed.
    • Assists in the documentation of conducted portions of investigations. Assists in conducting interviews with supervisors and employees. 


    • Assigns abatement dates and follows up as necessary to ensure that required abatement measures are completed, which, in some cases, requires additional inspections.
    • Provides technical industrial hygiene advice and assistance to employers, employee organizations, and others concerning industrial health hazards and possible approaches to their control; potential hazards resulting from specific work operations, facilities, and equipment.
    • Promotes industrial practices that are consistent with the goals and principles of industrial hygiene, requiring a comprehensive knowledge of a wide variety of chemicals and other hazards, and work practices affecting employee health.
    • Reviews laboratory analyses, and prepares reports which include findings and recommendations for control of identified hazards.
    • Reviews and/or determines the nature of the problem and the number and type of environmental samples to be collected.
    • Examines the effectiveness of existing control measures & collaborates with engineers, safety & occ. health specialists, & other technical personnel to develop & establish effective control measures.
    • Obtains immediate corrective action of conditions which are of imminent danger to life or limb.
    • Assists in the litigation process, providing agency attorneys with information necessary to support the legal defense of actions.

    *Duties at the GS-07 and GS-09 are developmental assignments and as the incumbent progresses, the assignments become more difficult and complex at the GS-11 and GS-12 full journeyman. 

    Travel Required

    75% or less - Frequent travel including some extended overnight lodging, some evening and weekend work required to conduct official OSHA enforcement inspection and investigation activities within a specific geographic area, and training purposes.
