The Risk/Quality Reviewer, as a Title 38 Nurse, is accountable to the Chief, Quality Management (QM) and his/her designee. She/he is responsible for conducting, supporting and promoting the established Medical Center risk management process in conjunction with the facility's Risk Manager.

The Risk/Quality Reviewer adheres to established policies, standards of care, and standards of practice while maintaining strict confidentiality. She/he must be proficient in leading and/or participating in multi-disciplinary teams, creative thinking and application, and active listening skills. She/he's practice should be an example to others of current clinical practice guidelines and standards of practice. This includes application of evidence-based guidelines and standards as well as assessment of care provided; either via demonstration or by review at the expert nurse level. She/he will assist to provide education; related to risk issues and facility incident reports. Identifies issues and situations that contribute to patient safety concerns and collaborates with Patient Safety to determine root cause and contributing factors. Identifies and communicates to top management opportunities to reduce and/or eliminate risks which could impact performance and care outcomes. Performs clinical reviews as directed by the Chief of Quality Management, request of Medical Center Leadership, or under direction of Risk Management program. Refers quality care issues to Risk Manager for Peer Review when necessary. Provides assistance in assessing, planning, designing, and implementing measures of performance, risk management, fact finding, and/or clinical performance improvement. Establishes relationships at the facility, VISN, and community to effectively communicate with professional, technical and administrative personnel within and outside the facility. Organizes, secures, integrates, and modifies resources to accomplish quality goals. Demonstrates work practices that include adherence to Infection Control standards, VA safety rules and regulations, and the safe use and operation of equipment.
