In this position, you will serve as an ARCHIVIST at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which is part of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Responsibilities will encompass a leading role in either processing or textual reference; project management and training of staff, interns, and volunteers; and ensuring that priorities and work assigned to archival staff are completed in compliance with NARA policies, standards, and procedures. In consultation with the Supervisory Archivist, you will also participate in establishing work priorities and in developing and improving work methods and performance of work in any area when priorities or workload require additional support.
As an ARCHIVIST, you will:
Systematically process presidential materials, Federal records, and personal collections in a team environment. May direct/train staff in performance of these activities.
Independently review non-classified documents for content requiring withdrawal or redaction for agency or donor deed of gift restrictions.
Develop increased levels of accessibility to the collections and historical time period for traditional and non-traditional users of the Library's historical materials through the creation of finding aids for processed records, conduct or oversight of research necessary for accurate and complete descriptions, and preparation of other descriptive tools and research guides. Assist with processes for converting holdings and descriptive information and finding aids into a variety of electronic formats to improve access by NARA staff and researchers.
Provide recommendations and advise to the Supervisory Archivist on acquisition strategies that will add to knowledge of the era in which the president lived, both during his administration and throughout his life.
Independently provide reference services in response to a wide-range of requests for information regarding the Library's textual and non-textual holdings. Requests are frequently complex and broad in scope and require responses that utilize or identify records from multiple sources. Also review grant applications for Foundation-funded research grants and make recommendations to the Foundation regarding the efficacy of the proposal. May direct/train staff in performance of reference services.
Provide orientation interviews for on-site researchers, explain Reading Room regulations and procedures, determine the specific area and level of research interest, guide researchers to the most effective approach to their specific projects and recommend materials appropriate for their use. While on Reading Room duty, provide ongoing reference services and guidance to researchers in the handling of archival material.
Apply preservation techniques and recommend strategies for textual records, electronic records, or audiovisual materials. May direct/train subordinate staff in taking appropriate preservation action to reduce or eliminate preservation risk to the holdings.
Using collections expertise, assist the education staff with the development of curriculum material and lead or participate in Library education activities. Collaborate with Museum and NARA exhibit staff in locating archival materials for use in exhibits.
Represent the Library and NARA to external groups. Speak to public and professional organizations about the Library. Conduct tours and explain the work of theLibrary forprofessional and civic groups, international visitors, undergraduate and graduate classes, other specially arranged student tours, and the general public. May also serve on committees, task forces, and/or working groups dealing with archival related topics within the Library system, NARA, and/or the profession.
The experience may have been gained in either the public, private sector or volunteer service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-time work is considered on a prorated basis. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: To be qualified for this position at the GS-12 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience for this position includes:
- Experience utilizing archival principles in order to maintain and administer record keeping systems. AND
- Experience designing and executing communications strategies, plans, or activities in order to perform customer outreach. AND
- Experience leading media preservation projects.

EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. OR
COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable: For the GS-12, you must have been at the GS-11 level for 52 weeks.
