    This position is located within the Primary Care Service Line at the VHA Maine Healthcare System, Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) in Augusta, ME. The Medical Technician (Blood Banking) is responsible for the collection, processing, and shipping of the required blood specimens from patients, and performs waived and moderately complex patient testing.

    Duties included, but are not limited to the following:

    • Performs venipunctures at various and difficult sites.
    • Performs waived and moderately complex QC and patient testing, such as hem occult, finger sticks, and urine analysis.
    • Responsible for processing and accessioning in laboratory orders.
    • Processes blood, urine and other body fluid specimens as necessary for testing.
    • Centrifuges, aliquots and determines acceptable specimens.
    • Elevates abnormal results.
    • Assists patients by making lab appointments, answering telephones and referring unanswered questions to the appropriate source.
    • Assists with patient intake, completion of clinical reminders, taking vital signs and performing EKGs.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm.
