    The New Mexico VA Health Care System (NMVAHCS) is seeking a board-certified surgeon for the position of Chief, Surgical Service. The incumbent serves as a Vice Chair in the Department of Surgery at University of New Mexico School of Medicine(UNM-SOM), and works collaboratively on surgical initiatives with UNM-SOM, community facilities, and in the Desert Pacific VA Health Care Network. Eight surgical sections comprise the surgery department including: general, cardiothoracic, ophthalmology/optometry, orthopedics/podiatry, otolaryngology, urology, vascular, and plastic surgery. Applicants with strong clinical and academic qualifications, including research, and experience in the administration of comprehensive surgical services are preferred. Academic appointment at the UNM-SOM will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

    The NMVAHCS has a strong commitment to both teaching and research. Its principal academic affiliate is the University of New Mexico school of Medicine. Together, the UNM SOM and NMVAHCS operate ACGME-accredited res idencies in the surgical specialties of cardiothoracic surgery, otolaryngology, surgery and urology. Growth in research programs is highly placed on the NMVAHCS strategic plan and is a focus of the incumbent.

    The New Mexico VA Health Care System is a tertiary referral center consisting of 176 acute hospital beds, 95 residential rehabilitatia.n treatment program beds and a 36 bed Nursing Home Care Unit. Albuquerque is home to the sole VA hospital in the state but the NMVAHCS operates six (6) VA-staffed Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) and five (5) contract CBOCs throughout the State and southern Colorado. Annually, over 64,000 veterans are served with approximately 38,205 hospital days
    and 685,814 outpatient visits.
