    As a Hydrologist within the Virginia and West Virginia Water Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: 

    • Manage projects that focus the collection of water-quality samples from multiples streams and the analysis water-quality data.
    • Perform investigations on the effects on changes in nutrient and sediments sources and pathways on resulting water-quality conditions across multiple streams and rivers.  
    • Collect water-quality samples from a variety of rivers. These water-quality samples are collected discrete and continuous monitoring equipment. Collects measurements of riverine discharge using mechanical and acoustic  technology.
    • Construct and maintain surface-water and water quality monitoring stations. Maintain and troubleshoot electrical systems used to collect, store, and transmit surface-water and water-quality data.
    • Perform statistical data analysis on water-quality data sets to characterize current conditions and to identify trends in water-quality conditions.  
    • Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.

    Physical Demands: The position requires moderate periods of standing and sitting while in the office. While in the field, considerable walking, lifting, bending, climbing, and stream wading is necessary to collect data.

    Work Environment: Office conditions are normal; field conditions may include extreme heat or cold, rain or snow, and hazardous conditions such as ice or flooding. 

    Travel Required

    Occasional travel - Travel may be required of up to 2 nights per month.
