    Summary

    The primary purpose of the Infection Control Nurse RN position is to demonstrate proficiency in practice based on conscious, deliberate planning and is self-directed in goal setting for managing complex patient situations in his/her assigned area. The RN provides leadership in identifying and maintaining infection control standards for the Medical Center in accordance with VHA directives and guidelines, nationally recognized infection control standards of practice, and regulatory requirements.

    Responsibilities

    This announcement will be used to fill vacancy in the Infection Control program at the VHA Washington DC VA Medical Center (VAMC). The Infection Control program falls under the purview of the Chief of Staff Office, which is responsible for a variety of clinical services. Major duties includes but are limited to:

    • Integrating surveillance findings into the organization's plan for improvement of practice and patient outcomes
    • Reviewing, analyzing, and applying existing regulations, standards, and/or guidelines of applicable professional organizations and government agencies
    • Recommending new or revised practices or procedures based on currently accepted, evidence based infection prevention and control strategies
    • Reviewing, analyzing and applying pertinent information from current scientific literature and publications
    • Integrating relevant public health issues into practice
    • Conducting investigations by using epidemiological principles
    • Using a systematic approach to surveillance to monitor the effectiveness of prevention and control strategies that are consistent with the organization's goals and objectives
    • Using standardized definitions for the identification and classification of events, indicators, or outcomes
    • Analyzing surveillance data utilizing internal and external benchmarks
    • Reporting epidemiological significant findings to the appropriate customer
    • Periodically evaluating the effectiveness of the surveillance plan and modifying as necessary
    • Working with other Infection Control practitioners to periodically evaluate the effectiveness of the infection control program
    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:30 -4:00; additional hours may be required to support organizational needs (compressed schedule).
