    Summary

    The position serves as Cytotechnologist in the Anatomic Pathology Service at the Long Beach VA Health Care System, and works in the cytology section of the Anatomic Pathology laboratory. The incumbent is responsible for the day-to-day oversight of specimen preparation, quality control, quality assurance and proficiency testing programs within the Cytology section. In addition, the incumbent performs highly specialized cytologic examinations on body fluids and other cytology samples.

    Responsibilities

    The major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

    • Participates in all cytology procedures and examinations, evaluating both GYN and Non-GYN cytology material.
    • Provides guidance to cytology technician(s) in the processing of a variety of specimens.
    • Receives specimens directly from surgical suites, designated specimen collection areas and medical center personnel; specimens are obtained or extracted from both inpatients and outpatients, using established practices which meet the requirements of accrediting agencies in the inpatient and outpatient setting, per physician orders.

    • Attends fine needle aspiration procedures in G.I. Clinic, Pulmonary and Radiology Departments (Ultrasound and CT Scans) to confirm an acceptable sample is available for the preparation of smears from the aspirations; verifies with the clinician or pathologist that the specimen is adequate for the subsequent cytologic cell examination.
    • Applies extensive understanding of principles and properties of cellular morphology for all specimens which include cervical/vaginal (gynecologic), GI, GU, respiratory, body cavity and cyst fluids, CSF specimens, fine needle aspiration biopsies of all organs (liver, pancreas, adrenal, lymph node, kidney, lung, breast, head and neck).
    • Communicates in person, telephonically or by other necessary means to advise physicians in other departments on proper differential diagnosis, makes independent professional decisions on methods of collection and handling of samples and on the need for repeat of the procedure if deemed necessary.
    • Assists the Anatomic Pathology supervisor in implementation and maintenance of regulatory quality control and quality assurance functions related to cytology.
    • Plans, implements, coordinates, and reviews record keeping methods and programs.
    Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm, alternate holidays and weekends.
