The incumbent will provide mechanical calculations and analysis, interpretation of reactor concepts, creation of mechanical specifications, creation and communication of mechanical design concepts, creation and communication of 3-D mechanical designs for Structures, Systems and Components. Experience in 3-D CAD design using CAD modeling software to create mechanical assemblies. These duties will be performed a member of a nuclear reactor concept development team. Applicants have a strong knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts and their application to practical machine design, a creative desire, good communication and interpersonal skills and good organizational and time management skills.

Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor’s degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

B. Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following:
In addition to the above basic requirements: All applicants must have one year of specialized experience at the GS-5 level (ZP-I at NIST). Specialized experience is defined as experience applying the principles of mechanical engineering (statics, dynamics, strength of materials, fluid mechanics, heat transfer and thermodynamics, to translate concept designs into feasible Structures, Systems and Components such as proven participation in a project that aims to design a large structure that involves multiple engineering disciplines. Examples of such structures are airplanes, ships, tunnels and bridges, power plants, or even large buildings. Experience with Computer Aided Design (CAD).
OR
1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement
Superior Academic Achievement is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.
1. Class standing -- Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.)-- Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
a. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum;
or
b. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.
Grade-point averages are to be rounded to one decimal place. For example, 2.95 will round to 3.0 and 2.94 will round to 2.9.
3. Election to membership in a national scholastic honor society -- Applicants can be considered eligible based on membership in one of the national scholastic honor societies listed below. These honor societies are listed by the Association of College Honor Societies. Agencies considering eligibility based on any society not included in the following list must ensure that the honor society meets the minimum requirements of the Association of College Honor Societies. Membership in a freshman honor society cannot be used to meet the requirements of this provision.
