    This position is located in the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs (PM), Office of Security Assistance (SA), and reports to the Deputy Assistant Secretary (DAS) for Regional Security and Security Assistance. PM is the principal link between the Departments of State and Defense. PM provides policy direction in the areas of international security, security assistance, military operations, defense strategy and policy, military use of space and defense trade.

    • Serves as initial point of contact for actions regarding the geographic area of assignment from Departmental offices, US embassies, US government (USG) agencies, international organizations, foreign governments, & non-governmental organizations.
    • Manages somewhat complex issue areas pertinent to the country or region (e.g., military grant assistance, military security cooperation) maintaining currency on legislative and policy developments affecting the USG’s stance and reactions.
    • Provides informational and policy planning consultations and orientations to colleagues and management officials in the Department and the inter-agency arena.
    • Analyzes political, economic, & other reporting from a wide variety of sources that include U.S. missions, Department of Defense reporting sources, Non-Governmental Organizations, & foreign electronic & print media within the region of interest.
    • At the GS-11 level, the incumbent performs essentially the same duties as outlined above; however, the scope and complexity of assignments are of less responsibility and independence and receives closer supervision than the GS-12 level.

    Travel Required

    Occasional travel - Domestic and international travel may be required less than 20% of the time.
