The Associate Chief Nurse (ACN) for Acute Inpatient Nursing is responsible for supervision of acute care inpatients of Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit, Progressive Care unit, three Medical/Surgical/Telemetry units and John Cochran Nursing Supervisors. The ACN for Acute Inpatient Services has responsibility for the program management and leadership of staff within the service. The incumbent, in partnership with the Associate Chief of Staffs (ACOSs), has oversight of acute inpatient units and implements interdisciplinary programs within the service, and the medical center. This may include, but is not limited to: access, patient flow processes, elimination or reduction strategies, and enhancing Veteran experiences. The ACN may be solely or collaboratively responsible for the evaluation of outcomes and program evaluation of for setting long and short-term programs and goals. The ACN will work with nursing leaders and other service chiefs on cross cutting projects or initiatives as leader or team member. The incumbent is a committed leader that engages and enhance the organization culture of safety through the application of a just culture and high reliable organization principles. The incumbent's work will reflect the VA ICARE values of Integrity, Commitment, Advocacy, Respect, and Excellence in all that he/she does.
The incumbent is an integral member of Nursing leadership. This nurse must exhibit leadership that is characterized by substantial and continuous responsibility and accountability for integral programs that cross services and disciplines in addition to influencing the organization mission and goals. The incumbent is a role model for Servant Leadership. The ACN will lead, develop and grow direct and indirect reports using coaching and mentoring. As a servant leader the incumbent will be a person of character, a compassionate collaborator, a skilled communicator, a system thinker, will put people first, have the foresight and lead with moral authority.
The incumbent is responsible for assessing and recommending the allocation of resources, both human and material, that are necessary to ensure positive outcomes of existing programs and new projects. The ACN uses quality data to design delivery models, ensure budgetary responsibility, and establish resource levels that will meet the needs of the Veteran patient.
The ACN leads the assigned nursing staff and other members of the interdisciplinary team in the integration of evidenced-based practice, research, and data into practice that will assist in the improvement of care with the service, medical center or network.
The Associate Chief Nurse for Acute Inpatient Nursing reports to the Associate Director for Patient Care Services.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time Nurses, and Nurse Anesthetists at the rate of 8 hours for each full biweekly pay period.
