This position would assist the Field Office Botanist. The incumbent provides technical expertise for the botany program and assists with planning future projects, monitoring existing projects, administering contracts for surveys and invasive plant control, collecting native seeds, restoring disturbed lands, and meeting natural resource management targets. The incumbent assists in implementing the Special Status plant/fungi program, including conducting botanical surveys, managing survey data, restoring habitat, and providing input and mitigation recommendations for field office projects. He/she assists with implementing the integrated invasive plant management program for the field office, including mapping infestations, planning and conducting manual and chemical control treatments, monitoring treatment effects, and managing associated data. The incumbent must obtain a BLM Pesticide Applicator’s Certification within the first 12 months of service. The incumbent administers botany program contracts, and provides technical assistance for cooperative agreements.
Majority of the work is performed outdoors, in rugged terrain; to include very steep, wet, muddy, rough, uneven or rocky surfaces. The position requires physical exertions, such as hiking, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, and lifting moderately heavy items, or similar activities on steep slopes in dense brush, over several hours. Individuals should be capable of conducting fieldwork year-round, working alone in remote areas for long periods of time, but also with other people, during early morning hours or during the day. The individual may be exposed to discomfort from extremes in weather temperatures and/or hostile wildlife, hostile insects, chemical, and physical hazards. Aspects of this position will also take place in an office environment.
Basic requirements: Degree: botany; or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany OR Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
