The CISE Division of Computer and Network Systems (CNS) supports research and education activities that invent new computing and networking technologies and that explore new ways to make use of existing technologies. CNS seeks to develop a better understanding of the fundamental properties of computer and network systems and to create better abstractions and tools for designing, building, analyzing, and measuring future systems. CNS also supports the computing infrastructure that is required for experimental computer science, and it coordinates cross-divisional activities that foster the integration of research, education, and workforce development.
Duties
The responsibilities of the NSF Program Director are constantly evolving. The Program Director is guided by the goals of NSF’s Strategic Plan: (1) transform the frontiers of science and engineering; (2) stimulate innovation and address societal needs through research and education; and (3) excel as a Federal Science Agency. The core strategies that NSF staff employ include developing intellectual capital, strengthening the physical infrastructure, integrating research and education, and promoting partnerships. Duties include the following:
Long-range planning and budget development for the areas of science represented by the Program;
Managing an effective, timely merit review, award and declination process, and post-award management process;
Communicating effectively the promise of the program and in so doing, advising the community of current and future funding opportunities;
Coordinating and liaising with other programs within NSF, other Federal agencies and organizations; and
Developing policies and plans for strengthening research and education programs.

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in social science, engineering, mathematics and statistics, or computer science, plus after award of the Ph.D., six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position; OR a Master’s Degree in social science, engineering, mathematics and statistics, or computer science, plus after award of the degree, eight or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position.
This position is outside the competitive civil service.
