    This position is located in the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Environmental Management, Office of Packaging and Transportation.  Office of Packaging and Transportation protects people and the environment by ensuring safe, compliant, and efficient packaging and transportation of materials critical to successful Department of Energy operations.

    Responsibilities

    As a Transportation Specialist, you will:

    • Develop, manage, interpret, and coordinate agency policies, guidance, plans and procedures for transportation and packaging activities for DOE materials, including hazardous materials (particularly radioactive), substances and wastes for consistency and regulatory compliance;
    • Develop and maintain integrated transportation and packaging tools for Headquarters and field applications, including the application of systems and automation technology to DOE's transportation and packaging activities;
    • Provide analyses, lessons learned, participate in the development of, and comment on proposed international, Federal, state, tribal and local transportation and packaging regulations;
    • Maintain an understanding of treatment/storage/disposal configuration and disposition options of all types of nuclear materials and wastes; and
    • Lead and conduct transportation safety and oversight compliance assessments, timely independent post-transportation incident investigations, often involving sensitive contract-related and oversight of Departmental activities regarding the movement and off-site shipment of Environment Management hazardous materials and wastes.

    Travel Required

    Occasional travel - Overnight travel 1 to 5 nights a month may be required.
