The Home Oxygen Coordinator serves as a Registered Respiratory Therapist administratively responsible for the quality assurance activities and day to day operation of the Home Oxygen Program. The incumbent must have the ability to assume a high level of responsibility in coordinating and managing a large home oxygen program and, as necessary, provide education and guidance to staff therapists on home oxygen clinical pathways of care and administrative processes. He/she will serve as the liaison between clinicians, patients in need of therapy with home oxygen, Prosthetics Service, and the Home Oxygen Contractor to maintain a functional home oxygen program that meets all VHA and regulatory standards of quality and safety. This position is in the Pulmonary Section of the Medical Service in the Robley Rex VA Medical Center.
The Home Oxygen Coordinator will have the knowledge and skills to perform all duties in the Respiratory Therapy Department and will act as a subject matter expert in the outpatient clinics run by the department including but not limited to: Home Oxygen clinic, 6 minute walk, and ABG. He/she will report to the Pulmonary Specialty Manager. You will be required to travel to Veterans homes.
Work Schedule: Full-Time; Day Shift (7:30-4) with rotating weekends and holidays

- Physical Standards: Must meet physical standards for employment, as indicated in VA Directive & Handbook 5019.
- Certification/Registration: Applicants must be a Registered Respiratory Therapist and have a current and active certificate as an RRT from the NBRC and a registry number, or a certificate from another body which the NBRC recognizes as its credentialing equivalent. This includes registration based on either:
1) Having fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination administered by the NBRC since 1983
2) Having fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination for a registered inhalation or respiratory therapist administered by the (1) National Board for Respiratory therapy from July 1974 through 1982; or (2) American Registry of Inhalation Therapists from 1961 through June 1974.
- At least one year of experience, within the last two years, working as a registered respiratory therapist in a hospital
- Other certification/credentials such as AE-C, CPFT, RPFT, ACCS, etc.
- Candidates must have ALL of the following:1. At least 1 year of successful experience related to respiratory therapy at the GS-7 level or equivalent. Qualifying experience at this level is work which includes duties such as: administering assisted and controlled ventilation to patients with tracheotomies and other complex medical problems requiring frequent adjustments in ventilator parameters; administering and monitoring advanced ventilator techniques such as positive end expriatory pressure and continuous positive airway pressure; developing plans for weaning patients from ventilators; assessing the respiratory status of patients using data acquired through physical observation and clinical analysis of blood gas data, ches z-rays, and electrocardiogram to determine the effectiveness of therapy being administered and to make recommendation to physicians regarding changes in treatment; performing the most difficult respiratory therapy procedures to maintain ventilation, including endotracheal intubation, tracheal lavage, and tracheotomy care; and providing in-service training to others in various specialized areas of respiratory care.
- Demonstrated knowledge and ability needed to perform complex respiratory procedures with minimal supervision. Is able to participate with physicians and nurses and other staff in planning respiratory treatment, with great reliance on the individual's knowledge of the equipment.
- Demonstrated knowledge and ability to provide emergency or critical respirator care; service as a shift leader or supervisor or sole responsible respiratory therapist on a shift; and to plan and conduct training session with respiratory therapy students, hospital staff, patients, and family members.
Physical Requirements: Average hours per work-day are 8, 10, or 12 hours. Shifts are variable, may include days, nights, and weekends. Patient care in the hospital setting is provided 24 hours per day, seven days a week year round. In a normal work-day, the employee may be required to combine standing and walking 70%-100% of a shift; lift up to 35 pounds frequently and up to 55 pounds occasionally; bend frequently; squat, kneel, climb/balance, reach above shoulder level and lift from high/low positions occasionally; bend and push/pull frequents. Repetitive use of hands would be for simple grasping, pushing and pulling approximately up to 26 pounds of pressure, and fine manipulation. You must have good manual dexterity and keyboarding skills. You must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word. You must be able to view and read information on computer screens.
