    Summary

    The mission of VA Northern Indiana Health Care System (VANIHCS), is to provide coordinated, compassionate and comprehensive quality primary care, mental health, surgical, intensive and extended care to Veterans in a timely, accessible and cost effective manner.

    Responsibilities

    The incumbent is designated at a minimum 0.1 clinical workload for their professional and provides coverage for clinical areas commensurate with their time providing direct patient care equaling about 15% of the time.

    He/she is responsible for the overall operation of a complex surgical program that includes the entire range of surgical care, ranging from ambulatory surgery to surgical critical care. The incumbent oversees the clinical activities of all sections of the Surgical Service.The successful candidate should be proficient in administrative, programmatic, clinical, and academic oversight of surgical programs to ensure the delivery of high quality patient care. The incumbent should have management experience, some of which must have been within the Veterans Health Administration, knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements, utilization review and quality improvement, outstanding interpersonal skills, and must have skill to lead and promote surgical staff excellence and staff development. The Incumbent directs health care programs, delegating authority and responsibility to meet both the medical center and service goals and to apply that knowledge to improve and optimize health care and is responsible for the fiscal management of the department.

    The Incumbent establishes and promotes an atmosphere of unity through collaborative practice and effective communication between all staff disciplines within the Surgical Service. He/she is also responsible to help foster a high level of patient and staff satisfaction. The incumbents expected to demonstrate interpersonal communication skills and behaviors that reflect a commitment to continuous professional development, ethical practice, understanding and sensitivity to diversity, and a responsible attitude toward their patients and profession.

    The incumbent collaborates and represents the Surgical Service in the Clinical Executive Board, Professional Standards Board, various Medical center committees/boards, Surgical Service Committees, and VISN surgical workgroups and meets regularly with the Chief of Staff.

    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, day shift. May need to work off tour and/or weekends based on the needs of the Service.
