Incumbent serves as the preserve's National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) Coordinator and Wilderness Coordinator, is located in the Resource Management Division, Big Cypress National Preserve, with duty station at the Ochopee Headquarters. The purpose of the position is to ensure adequate consideration of environmental and non-environmental factors in Preserve management and decision making.
The Big Cypress National Preserve is a place of remarkable natural beauty. The freshwaters of the Big Cypress Swamp, essential to the health of the neighboring Everglades, supports the rich marine estuaries along Florida's southwest coast. Protecting over 729,000 acres of this vast swamp, Big Cypress National Preserve contains a mixture of tropical and temperate plant communities that are home to a diversity of wildlife, including the elusive Florida Panther. Culturally, the Big Cypress Swamp has served as home and refuge to many people throughout time including the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, the Seminole Tribe of Florida and early settlers. Living and working in South Florida offers many unique benefits. Featuring both subtropical and tropical climate areas, good schools, and nearby cities, the location offers many opportunities to explore culture, art, and recreation. The position is based in Ochopee, Florida.

Physical Demands: The work requires mental alertness and the ability to concentrate for long periods of time. Although most work is sedentary, field inspections involve activities demanding a certain amount of exertion such as hiking, paddling, travel by ORV, bending and carrying heavy equipment. Site visits, public contacts, and attendance at hearings or agency meetings involve travel by all means of transportation.
Working Conditions: Work is performed primarily in offices and meeting rooms, and necessitates travel throughout South Florida. Site visits expose the incumbent to weather extremes, insect bites, and other physical demands.
The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are suitable for telework and the selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
