This position is located in the Division of Fair Labor Standards, one of the divisions in the National Office of the Solicitor of Labor. The Associate Solicitor for Fair Labor Standards is responsible for the overall planning and direction of the Department’s administration and enforcement of the Fair Labor Standards Act (including child labor), Family and Medical Leave Act, Migrant and Seasonal Agricultural Workers Protection Act, various contract labor standards statutes (including the Davis-Bacon and Related Acts and the Service Contract Act), Title III of the Consumer Credit Protection Act, Employee Polygraph Protection Act, various worker protection provisions of the Immigration and Nationality Act, numerous laws protecting environmental, safety and corporate whistleblowers, and other statutes. The Division specifically is responsible for appellate litigation and the preparation of regulations, interpretations, and opinions pertaining to these statutes and for otherwise advising the Solicitor and the Department’s other agencies on matters within the Division’s program area.
The person selected for this position will be responsible for performing the duties listed below:
* Handling administrative functions including telephone and receptionist coverage, delivering documents, escorting outside visitors as necessary, and maintaining and ensuring that fax, copiers, and printers are functioning properly and equipped.
* Establishing, coordinating, and maintaining litigation and non-litigation case files for assigned cases and other matters. Maintaining document control systems for assigned matters, including indexing, document numbering, and coding.
* Monitoring incoming and outgoing legal materials including general correspondence, decisions and orders of administrative and judicial tribunals, litigation files, and a variety of other legal documents.
* Preparing correspondence for signature by a paralegal specialist or attorney.
* Assisting in preparing documents, including briefs, to be filed in the courts or before administrative bodies.
* Assisting attorneys and paralegal specialist by retrieving, photocopying, and assembling briefs, exhibits, and other materials for litigation and other legal matters.

To be qualified for the GS-06 Legal Assistant, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience reviewing legal documents for conformance with procedural requirements, grammatical/legal accuracy; maintaining legal files; handling legal correspondence; tracking all legal correspondence to ensure deadlines are met, etc., that has provided you with the specific knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

To be qualified for the GS-07 Legal Assistant, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience providing support to attorneys/paralegals; applying appropriate legal procedures in writing correspondence and processing cases; maintaining files for follow-up dates; assisting attorneys/paralegals in preparing for cases/hearings, etc., which has provided you with the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this position.

To be qualified for the GS-08 Legal Assistant, you must have at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience providing support to attorneys, paralegals and management; applying appropriate legal procedures in writing correspondence and processing cases and preparing non-legal correspondence; knowledge of applicable court rules and appropriate styles used when creating and finalizing legal documents, maintaining a tracking system for activities and files for follow-up dates; processing docketing requests, preparing written documents and materials using automated applications, and providing legal assistance and technical work to enter, store and update automated docket databases.
