The incumbent serves as a Highway Accident Investigator (Project Manager) with primary responsibility for the development and management of highway accident reports for Board's consideration. Other types of NTSB investigation products such as brief of accidents, stand-alone safety recommendations, and special investigations reports are also within the scope of work. Incumbent participates, manages and/or lead special projects such as Investigation Hearings; Symposiums and Forums; and Special Investigations. Incumbent assists the Hearing Officer in the overall planning or conduct of Investigative Hearings. Incumbent may serve a Group Chairman on major accident investigations with responsibility for investigating issues in area of technical expertise (human factors, vehicle factors, motor carrier factors, highway factors or survival factors).
NOTE: Investigative assignments may be given on short notice and may involve work at unusual times for long hours at accident sites, sometimes in remote, rugged and hostile settings. The incumbent must be able to work in physically demanding and adverse conditions such as in swamps and deserts, on steep, uneven and mountainous terrain. The incumbent will be responsible for the effective, economical, and efficient utilization of all resources committed to the investigation. The incumbent should demonstrate credit worthiness for issuance of a government travel charge card.
