The RN practices in the ICU. The ICU is comprised of the Medical and Surgical specialty units which deal with specific human responses to life-threatening problems. These units are within the Acute and Specialty Care section of Nursing Service. The staff nurse is responsible as a team leader or nursing team member for a group of assigned patients on his/her shift. The RN delivers theoretically and scientifically based nursing care to an assigned group of veterans. He/she is constantly building upon current clinical competencies. Serves as an advocate for the veteran and is obligated to demonstrate nonjudgmental and nondiscriminatory attitudes and behaviors that are sensitive to veteran diversity. The RN is accountable to function as an effective team member, team leader, preceptor and/or charge nurse.
The ICU Staff Nurse demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care through collaborative strategies with others. The Scope of Practice is defined by the dimensions outlined in VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G6 and specific to the grade and level for an RN.
Work Schedule: 7:30am - 8:00pm or 7:30 pm - 8:00am, weekends and holidays required
