    In this position you will be responsible for coordinating the development and validation of molecular diagnostic operations for Plant Protection and Quarantine (PPQ) programs, determining the quarantine status of organisms intercepted at ports of entry, and domestically as part of PPQ's pest surveys.

    • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
    • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
    • Making final, authoritative molecular taxonomic determinations of plant pathogens and other plant pests intercepted at ports of entry, found in samples from domestic field surveys, and domestic emergency program.
    • Conferring with national and international taxonomic and/or molecular scientists to apply collective data.
    • Recommending quarantine actions for perishable and other commodities based on risk analysis of the identified pest.
    • Searching, reviewing, and evaluating current foreign and domestic scientific literature and contacts colleagues for information on new diagnostic testing techniques.
    • Identifying and evaluating problem areas or deficiencies in identification skills of field personnel regarding use of molecular and biochemical diagnostics.

    Travel Required

    Occasional travel - You may be expected to travel domestically and internationally for this position.
