    This position is located within Facility Service. As a working leader, the incumbent of this position will lead Roads and Grounds employees (WG-7) and compensated work therapy workers in the day-to-day operations for the department at the Medical Center.

    The work includes the operation of gasoline, diesel or electric powered vehicles and requires knowledge of heavy and light duty machinery, engines, parts and how systems work. The vehicles are driven in restricted traffic environments on Government installations, over public roads and highways or under cross-country conditions.

    This work involves servicing a wide variety of VA owned heavy and light mobile equipment such as a 4 x4 backhoe (diesel), heavy duty 4 x4 loaders (diesel), skid steer loader (diesel), assorted vans and SUV's (gas), vans with wheelchair lifts, assorted buses from 8 passenger to 30 passenger (diesel), assorted landscaping/grounds equipment and an electric forklift. Incumbent must be capable of making repairs that can be accomplished by removing, adjusting, or replacing defective or worn parts and components. The incumbent will take part in identifying failed components, diagnosing problems, disassembling, repairing, and assembling major systems, components, and operating mechanisms.

    For example, the employee will replace seals and shaft sealing rings, horns, wiring harnesses, starting switches, sensors, fuel pumps, and water pumps; adjust voltage and current control units, engine idle, brakes; and clean or replace filters, battery cables, engine components. The incumbent will be operating platform, van, stake and dump trucks, fuel trucks, and plow-equipped vehicles which have a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 pounds up to 32,000 pounds. Some vehicles are equipped with air brakes.

    The incumbent will be a Wage Lead for the roads and Grounds Department and will assist with the operations of the Roads and Ground Department insuring management of the Fleet vehicles, assigning duties such as everyday seasonal grounds operations and driver assignments. The incumbent will pass on instructions from the supervisor to all staff and assign tasks as appropriate and ensure that instructions are understood and will report back to the supervisor when tasks are complete. As a wage lead the incumbent will be responsible to ensure that all Roads and Grounds staff are trained on all equipment that they use in day to day operations.

    Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM with mandatory OT for snow removal.
