As a Highway Safety Specialist, you will:
- Direct, manage, coordinate or perform projects or studies of particular sensitivity or breadth, particularly undertakings that require the integration and synthesis of information from multiple program areas.
- Initiate and maintain liaison with other government agencies and with private sector groups and organizations to exchange information about national programs, including general and specific highway safety strategies and countermeasures designed to promote highway safety priorities such as motorcycles, pedestrian safety, school transportation, bicycle safety and older drivers.
- Represent the Office, as directed, in venues such as the annual Lifes vers Conference, National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), Transportation Research Board (TRB), Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), National Association of State Motorcycle Safety Administrators (NASMSA), program specific trade associations, and as an Agency representative with other similar professional associations.
- Conduct liaison among Agency offices and divisions on assigned programmatic duties.
IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate for this position possesses a broad based general knowledge of highway safety particularly as it relates to changing attitudes and behavior of the driving public. The individual must be capable of managing procurements and evaluating technical information and reports related to motor vehicle crashes through the use of database structures and software applications. The candidate must also analyze technical reports to propose and support specific actions based on these assessments. To be successful at assisting the agency in its goal of identifying and eliminating motor vehicle crashes and fatalities, the ideal candidate must be a self-starter, work with minimal supervision, possess strong interpersonal skills, and be able to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
