    This position is located in the Pentagon Heating and Refrigeration Plant (PH&RP). The PH&RP is responsible for the production of steam and chilled water to supply the heating and cooling needs of the Pentagon. The Utility Systems Repairer-Operator is responsible for the operation and operational maintenance of multiple fuel boilers and associated auxiliary equipment, and the operation and maintenance of industrial refrigeration systems.

    Your typical work assignments may include the following:

    1. Operates, starts and shuts down equipment for proper operation and mission accomplishment, using computer controls in the control room, local digital controls, or fully manual controls on or near the equipment. Operates the computer system to observe equipment readings and systems parameters.
    2. Maintains, repairs, and tests a variety of complex equipment and systems involving power boilers, single and multiple fuel power boilers, and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment such as water treatment systems, chemical dispensers, electrostatic precipitators, bag houses and ash removal equipment, and wet particulate scrubbers.
    3. Performs preventative and scheduled maintenance on plant systems and equipment including boiler feed pumps, fuel oil pumps, air compressors, turbines, generators, steam traps, coal handling equipment, boiler controls and instrumentation, and combustion fans.
    4. Plans and lays out installation, repair, and/or modification of a variety of complex equipment and systems. Installs, connects, and adjusts pumps, motors, valves, relays, solenoids, switches, safety devices, thermostats, rheostats, aquastats, and other similar devices. Uses stationary and industrial type power equipment such as power saws, lathes, and grinders.
    5. Troubleshoots single and multiple fuel power boilers and associated auxiliary and pollution control equipment. Monitors and tests the operation of power boiler systems with equipment such as automatic controls, valves, lime slurry systems, fly ash recovery systems, piping, pumps, and related components. Tests fuel delivery systems, fans, conveyer belts, preheaters, coal pulverizers, worm screw feeders, moving floors, de-aerating equipment, water treatment equipment, economizers, and air compressors. Troubleshoots electrical and pneumatic controls.

    Occasional travel - This position may require travel away from your normal duty station on military or commercial aircraft.
