    Responsibilities

    The General Engineer:

    • Serves as a senior General Engineer on all technical aspects of liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities, process safety, and safety regulatory initiatives. Is a subject matter expert in all aspects of LNG facility siting, design, permitting, construction, operations, and safety.
    • Provides direction and guidance to other staff engineers necessary for LNG facility siting, permitting, construction, inspection, operations, and safety.
    • Plans, develops, initiates, and manages a program for improving the regulatory oversight of LNG facility siting, permitting, construction, inspection, operations, and safety. 
    • Provides direction and guidance to other staff engineers necessary for LNG facility siting, permitting, construction, inspection, operations, and safety.
    • Represents OPS during any NTSB evaluation of major accident investigations and failure analysis.
    • Represents OPS on national committees, work groups, and review teams.  Actively engages with various national and international experts on issues related to advanced materials, performance evaluations, and nondestructive inspection techniques to enhance the impact and compatibility of industry standards with the safety standards.

    This position is perfect for an experienced liquefied natural gas (LNG) engineer who is looking for challenging assignments. As a General Engineer within PHMSA’s Engineering and Research Division, you will assist in all technical aspects of LNG programs. You will conduct investigative research to identify and test technology-based processes and activities to better anticipate and prevent safety and environmental problems; evaluate the adequacy of LNG operators' risk control actions, analyze data to pinpoint safety issues, research and make recommendations on programmatic solutions; and perform technical assessments in major field investigations as needed. You will advise and support a program for improving the regulatory oversight of LNG facility siting, permitting, construction, inspection, operations, and safety.
