In support of the mission of the National Park Service, the fundamental objectives of the work performed in the position are:Resource Protection - preserving the natural, cultural, and human resources of the park by preventing the degradation, deterioration, and destruction of the ecosystems, scenery, wildlife, historical structures and artifacts; and by preventing the loss and theft of objects, flora, and wildlife. Provides services to more than one park.Communications - receives and processes emergency and non-emergency requests for service and information by telephone, radio or walk-ins. The dispatcher obtains the essential facts and dispatches the appropriate response units (such as law enforcement, search and rescue, and fire), maintains documentation and makes notifications.Equipment and Software Functions - operates multi-frequency radio console, multi-agency frequencies, a complex closed-circuit surveillance system, a security bollard system, computer-based radio and surveillance recording systems, multi-purpose alarm systems, and performs general communications center duties including file maintenance, typing, data entry, and processing a high volume of telephone calls. Dispatch also operates numerous computer applications, including a complex law enforcement network. Dispatch safeguards confidential and law enforcement sensitive information, processes law enforcement requests and paperwork, and maintains detailed computerized logs. This position also requires the entry of case records, processing of violation notices, arrest entries, and other documents.These duties constitute the basic reasons for the existence of the position, occupy a substantial portion of the Dispatcher's working time, and are assigned on a regular and recurring basis.This position is suited to a team player who can work and communicate well in both calm and stressful situations. Weekend, holiday, and/or evening work and overtime will be required.

Physical Demands: Incumbent must be in excellent mental condition in order to respond to emergency and law enforcement situations which arise. Must be mentally alert, have good hearing, be able to read printed matter, type on a computer and typewriter keyboards at approximately 30 words-per-minute, possess common sense, and have no fears about talking to the public under adverse conditions. Requires sitting in one place with intense concentration for long periods of time. Some occasions arise where long hours without breaks are required. Because work is often of an emergency nature, it can be emotionally stressful. Position required bending and lifting boxes and equipment up to 40 pounds.
