This position is part of theGovernment Publishing Office inDistrict of Columbia. This position is located in the Power Branch of the Facilities Division. Stationary Engineers may rotate on three shifts (6:45 to 2:45; 2:45 to 10:45; and 1045 to 06:45) every eight weeks and also rotate on the various jobs which of substation, Mechanical, Air-Conditioning and Batteries.

As an Stationary Engineer your typical work assignments may include the following.
Substation:
U.S. Citizenship is Required.
Selectee must pass a drug test prior to appointment.
Selectee must pass a background check prior to appointment.
Males born after 12/03/59 must be registered for Selective Service.
Selectee may be required to serve a one year probationary period.
Selectee must be able to obtain and maintain (Suitability).
Selectees must pass a physical examination prior to appointment.
Strength test may be required.

Responsibility - Theincumbent of this position reports to the Foreperson and Assistant Foreperson of the Power Branch. The Incumbent operates with a high degree of technical independence. The substation responsibilities are crucial to the safe operation and maintenance of the GPO Facility.
Physical Effort - Duties may require prolonged standing, walking, stooping, bending, crawling stretching, and reaching above the shoulders and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. An extensive amount of hand, wrist, and arm movement is involved. Work may require repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and where parts of the system worked on are in hand to reach places.
Working Conditions - Duties are mainly performed indoors but may involve exposure to cold temperatures during the performance of duties. Work may be performed where there is loud noise. Work is performed in proximity of moving mechanical parts, etc. The incumbent may also be exposed to fumes or odors, dirt, dust, and grease, etc.

Background Investigation:
To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully completed a background investigation for a Suitability.
