This attorney position is one of the USCG's experts on providing the legal services required to support Coast Guard compliance with all applicable laws and regulations governing the legal representation of service members in the Physical Disability Evaluation System (PDES).
Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team. Typical work assignments include:
-Mentoring and coach the junior attorneys and provide initial and on-going training for these attorneys commensurate with their experience.
-Advising, assisting, and advocating for service members undergoing physical disability processing.
-Ensuring that service members are prepared for their hearings and that their cases are fully developed and complete, both factually and strategically, thereby presenting the strongest case to both the Informal and Formal Evaluation Boards and any subsequent rating boards.
-Providing legal counsel and assistance to the service member including, but not limited to, case preparation, client preparation, witness identification and preparation, document collection, and legal research and writing, and in court representation at contested disability hearings.
-Conducting research in connection with pending cases and analyze factual and legal issues.
-Developing policies to implement and execute the representation of service members being evaluated for continued service by the PDES program.

-Demonstrated knowledge of Physical Disability Evaluation System (PDES) principles, regulations, procedures and laws sufficient to provide legal advice at the earliest planning stages of PDES process.
-Demonstrated ability to effectively brief high level military and civilian officials, and to analyze/advise, on sensitive PDES issues/cases.
-Confident and persuasive oral presentation skills, together with display of appropriate protocol, are essential.
-Demonstrated knowledge of a large and complex body of law in which precedents are frequently conflicting or nonexistent in order to provide advice on PDES.
-Demonstrated knowledge of negotiation techniques to advise management in the development of pre-negotiation strategy and in conducting negotiations.
-Demonstrated knowledge of a legal/judicial field to generate and develop new legal hypotheses and theories.
-Demonstrated ability to conduct case preparation, research difficult and complex legal issues.
-Demonstrated knowledge and experience ensuring the quality of attorney work product.
