The Advanced Medical Support Assistant position is located at the Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System, Austin, TX. The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model within the Medical Center. S/he is responsible for providing assistance to Veterans to ensure a smooth process in the management of his/her outpatient appointments and/or Non VA medical care.

The AMSA interacts effectively with peers, patients, families and members of the healthcare team in a courteous, tactful, and professional manner promoting positive work relationships. The position requires an advanced knowledge of medical terminology, computerized data entry and information processing systems, setting and managing priorities and deadlines, and participating and providing input in solving operational or procedural issues in team huddles/team meetings. Duties include, but are not limited to:
·Interpreting, verifying, and scheduling appointments.
·Ensures that clinic utilization is optimized and effectively supports the needs of the clinic and the Veterans.
·Verifying and updating patient demographic and insurance information.
·Receiving and directing telephone calls.
·Data entry into and monitoring of the Electronic Wait List (EWL), Recall Reminders and Return to Clinic orders.
·Preparing, printing and distributing various reports, correspondence.
·Faxing documents, mail distribution, retrieving and responding to messages/announcement.
·Performing basic eligibility requirements.
·Completing all mandatory training, competencies related to their position and other administrative duties as assigned.
·Participate in team huddles/team meetings to manage and plan patient care, set priorities and deadlines, adjusting the flow of work to meet team and patient needs.

Ambulatory Care: The AMSA will work in an interdisciplinary coordinated care deliver model and perform the administrative aspects of patient care to include: the receipt, intake, appointment scheduling, and indexing of health and administrative information.
Work Schedule: Rotating tours, Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. or 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and depending on the needs of the clinic.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary and walking. The work requires the ability to handle multiple demands simultaneously in dealing with a wide variety of clients on a daily basis. Tasks will require prolonged use of computers. There are lengthy periods of sitting, interrupted by intervals of walking and climbing stairs about the medical center to make the many personal contacts required of this position.
