As a Health Physicist, you will:
Provide authoritative technical recommendations regarding program direction and policy development based on independent evaluation and personal expertise of the hazards, risk, and control of radioactive materials affecting safety, health, the environment, and security.
Provide expert advice in (1) the development, evaluation, and promulgation of national safety standards for the transportation of radioactive material by all modes of transport; (2) carrying out a broad range of functions supporting the Agency's statutory mission in accordance with Hazardous Materials Transportation Laws; and (3) forums where international organizations set standards for the international transportation of radioactive materials.
Review and keep abreast of developments at the cutting edge of knowledge, and technology for the testing, hazard evaluation and classification of radioactive materials. Identifies needed technical support, special development, or research work that DOT should sponsor for the development of standards for transportation of radioactive material and assists in the management of contract service efforts in this area.
Provide key technical leadership in the development of U.S. proposals for national and international standards regarding the methods and approaches used in testing materials, hazard evaluation, and classification of radioactive material affecting safety, health the environment, and security.
IDEAL CANDIDATE: The ideal candidate for this position would possess knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices in the field of radiation protection, to include experience developing radiation protection programs for employees, emergency responders, and the general public. The ideal candidate would also have knowledge of the domestic and international regulations governing the safe transport of radioactive materials and either be, or working to become, and Certified Health Physicist.
