The Deputy Director of the Appellate Staff, Civil Division, is a Senior Executive Service position within the U.S. Department of Justice. The Appellate Staff is principally responsible for the appellate work of the Civil Division. The work of the Appellate Staff encompasses a full range of procedural and substantive issues presented in Civil Division litigation, including national security matters. The incumbent assists the Director in overseeing all aspects of the litigation and administrative functions of the Staff, developing policy for the Staff, and supervising both attorney and support positions. The incumbent also has front-line management responsibility for ensuring that Staff attorneys and employees properly handle classified information, as well as for overseeing the operation of the Appellate Staff's Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF). The office's caseload involves some of the most important, difficult, and complicated cases over which the Civil Division has jurisdiction in the federal courts of appeals, and before the U.S. Supreme Court when assigned by the Solicitor General. The Staff's cases typically involve questions of great national interest, often with foreign policy or national security implications, and are frequently of utmost importance to conducting the Government's business, defending the Executive Branch's prerogatives, preserving the public fisc, and protecting national security.

The Executive Core Qualifications (ECQs)of the selectee who is not a current or former career Senior Executive employee (Title V) must be approved by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) before appointment. Education must be accredited by an accrediting institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education in order for it to be credited towards qualifications. Therefore, provide only the attendance and/or degrees from schools accredited by accrediting institutions recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
