The boiler plant operator has the responsibility for the safe and continuous operation of the steam generation plant, with a capacity of up to 100,000 pounds of steam per hour. The plant may contain water tube, fire tube, or both kinds of high pressure boilers. The incumbent takes samples of boiler feed water and tests for proper levels of chemical additives and adjusts levels as needed when indicated by results. During non-administrative shifts and on weekends, the boiler plant operator will check in with the engineering mechanic on duty and relay any alarms that occur on the building energy management system so that the mechanic can investigate and take corrective action.
Work Schedule: Jamaica Plain - rotating shifts; West Roxbury - vacation relief shift with regular tour of Sunday to Thursday 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Physical Requirements:
The position requires moderate to strenuous effort and long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending, and crouching. The incumbent must work from ladders and catwalks, at times above 20 feet, and in cramped spaces. The incumbent frequently must lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds, and may be required to handle heavier loads with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers.The incumbent primarily works indoors, but may occasionally work outside for short periods. There is regular exposure to dirty, greasy, and dusty areas as well as extreme (both hot and cold) temperatures. Incumbent is exposed to above-average noise levels for prolonged periods. There is also exposure to various hazards such as electrical shock, burns and scalds from hot water and steam, cuts, abrasions, bruises, and falls. Incumbent may have to work in confined spaces when maintaining and inspecting boilers and tanks.
