Incumbent plans and carries out the full range of treatment where therapeutic objectives & procedures require the application of general skills& knowledge for a diverse population of patients with acute/chronic medical/surgical/behavioral conditions. Established treatment procedures are not always applicable,must be adapted & applied with critical concern for patients who are acutely or chronically ill, who have a combination of mental or physical disabilities with secondary complications.Treatment plans require frequent modification in response to subtle but significant changes in condition of patient.Completes evaluation &treatment in timely fashion.Chart review will allow an opportunity to assess appropriateness of referral &possible contraindications for treatment. Flexibility of schedule must be maintained to allow for unscheduled patients and for mentoring & consultation.Evaluation includes a medical history and results & interpretation of appropriate tests and measurements performed. Tests may need to be adapted because of physical, cognitive and emotional disabilities.Utilizes evaluation data to plan& implement comprehensive patient treatment programs, involving patient in goals setting& treatment processes as feasible. Demonstrates full professional understanding of theories of occupational therapy treatment and their proper application, particularly those techniques related to adult & geriatric patients. Recognizes even subtle responses or adverse reactions to treatment, initiates effective action, advises other health care team members. Involves the patient, family, significant others& pertinent health care staff in treatment process by ongoing communication through demonstration, instruction, team conferences, & chart documentation as appropriate to each patient's treatment goals.Has knowledge in prosthetics/orthotics& durable medical equipments including regular wheelchairs and lifters. Performs assessments, recommendations and adaptation or modifications for benefit of patients at assigned area.Exercises professional judgment in planning and carrying out treatment programs to meet treatment objectives for population served. Has an active relationship with the Occupational Therapy Supervisor, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Attending Physicians and Behavioral Health Services Attending Physician to include open communication &participation in case discussions.Conducts home evaluations and visits as applicable, depending on patient's need.
