The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Glacier National Park is Mid April-October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) GS-0404-04
Major Duties:
- Recruiting and training volunteers and co-workers in field safety and observation techniques, coordinating schedules and logistical requirements, and ensuring proper quality assurance/quality control, data management, and summarizing data for annual project summary reports. Work may be up to 80% office based.
- Organizing and conducting natural resource education for outreach groups and delivering presentations on research, wildlife monitoring and other natural resource topics to a wide variety of audiences.
- Collecting field and GIS data on wildlife species including but not limited to: Common loons and other waterfowl, migratory birds, carnivores, bats, mountain goats, pikas and other potential species of concern in Glacier National Park.
Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) GS-0404-05
Additional Major Duties including those listed for the GS4:
- Working with the public, contractors and staff on environmental requirements and encourages compliance with natural resource law and policy.
- Operating and maintaining complex field data collection equipment, placement of this equipment on the landscape, retrieving data in the field under a variety of weather conditions, and analyzing the data collected into short reports.
- Organizing and conducting natural resource field research and management and interacting with district staff from a variety of disciplines to successfully and safely complete the tasks.
Biological Science Technician (Wildlife) GS-0404-07
Additional Major Duties including those listed for the GS4 and GS5:
- Developing GIS products for annual project summary reports
- Organizing and conducting natural resource field research in conjunction with collaborators, such as graduate students, conducting field research on a variety of wildlife species, and interacting with district staff from a variety of disciplines to successfully and safely complete the tasks.
Housing Information: Government housing may be available. Housing is generally shared, either in single dwellings or dormitory style. Deductions for government quarters are made from the employee's paycheck. Seasonal employees occupying government housing are not permitted to have pets.
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.

Rehire Options for 1039s: Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for the possibility of extensions or rehire in subsequent service years.
Physical Demands: The work requires regular physical exertion such as walking or climbing over wet, rough, uneven, and/or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping or reaching to observe, collect, and/or record field data. Moderately heavy items, such as equipment pack weighing up to 50 pounds must be lifted and carried on a regular basis. May be required to hike several miles a day in the backcountry.
Working Conditions: The work environment varies from office/laboratory settings to field sites. The work performed in the field involves regular and reoccurring exposure to extreme weather conditions and terrain, poisonous plants, biting insects and wild animals.
