The Pharmacy Technician is a supportive member of the pharmacy staff in a Bureau of Prisons (BOP) federal correctional facility. Under the supervision of a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician helps to provide technical support functions in accordance with accepted policies and procedures. As directed by a pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician performs clerical duties and other miscellaneous functions as needed for the day-to-day operation of the pharmacy.
Prepares extemporaneous medications. Fills each patient's cassette with appropriate medications, dosage form, and quantity. Prepares and delivers interim fill medications to the nursing station before cart exchange, and participates in quality assurance functions according to pharmacy policy and procedures. Responsible for administrating certain prescribed medications via the pill-line system as mandated by the Health Services Manual. Prepares prescription labels as appropriate. Prepares pharmaceutical medications using aseptic techniques in the laminar flow hood.
Delivers interim doses to floor. Cleans IV hood, checks refrigerator temperature, and documents each. Checks stock levels on medications and miscellaneous supplies to determine needs. Prepares and places orders to pharmaceutical drug manufacturers and storeroom according to established inventory control guidelines. Receives pharmaceuticals and supplies upon delivery and verifies them with the order.
Along with all other correctional institution employees, incumbent is charged with responsibility for maintaining security of the institution. The staff correctional responsibilities precede all others required by this position and are performed on a regular and recurring basis.

Education
Successful completion of 2-years of study in pharmacy or pharmacy technology that included at least 12 semester hours in courses in the care, storage, distribution, and preparation of pharmaceuticals, and appropriate laboratory work.

Six (6) months of general experience. General Experience is any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation.
Successful completion of a course for medical technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime Service under close medical and professional supervision is creditable on a month-for-month basis for general experience.
AND
You must have at least six (6) months of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in federal service. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and must typically be in or related to the position to be filled. This experience may have been gained in hospital pharmacies, retail pharmacies, or in pharmaceutical firms or laboratories.

Special Conditions of Employment Section:
Appointment is subject to satisfactory completion of a pre-employment and panel interview, urinalysis, physical, and background investigation. All applicants not currently working in an institution will be required to complete a qualification inquiry regarding convictions of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence in order to be authorized to carry a firearm.
The Core Value Assessment (CVA) is an in-person assessment that must be facilitated at a Bureau of Prisons Human Resource Servicing office. On the day of the scheduled interview, a CVA will be administered. The applicant assessment must be completed within a 70 minute time period and a passing score must be obtained. Further employment consideration will not be extended if the applicant fails to complete the examination or fails to achieve a passing score. Note: The Core Value Assessment will not be administered to current BOP employees.
Successful completion of the "Introduction to Correctional Techniques," three-week training course at Glynco, Georgia is required.
