    The position of Medical Technician (Phlebotomist) is located at the Williamsport Community Based Outpatient Clinic, Williamsport, PA.

    Responsibilities

    • The position is that of a Medical Technician assigned to provide phlebotomy support for outpatients. The incumbent will perform laboratory testing, phlebotomy, accession specimens, perform specimen processing and other procedures necessary to ensure appropriate specimen receipt and handling.
      The majority of the incumbent's day will be spent performing venipunctures specimen collections of outpatients. The incumbent will be required to proficiently collect these blood samples with a minimal number of failures, patient bruising, or required resticks, and ensure that samples are submitted to the clinical laboratory with the least possible delay. He/ she will ensure the proper identification of all patients and specimens. The incumbent's productivity will be required to remain at a minimum of ten patient draws per hour.
      The incumbent may also be required to receive and sort specimens, check request slips for proper information, log in specimens and package specimens for transportation to the Core Lab. The incumbent may also be assigned to technical tasks that include, but are not limited to:
      • Preparation of samples for testing in the various clinical laboratory sections, such as labeling, centrifugation, decanting, aliquoting, etc.
      • Distribution, storage and delivery of supplies and other materials used for the purpose of phlebotomy services.
      • Cleaning and restocking the blood collection room and areas where collection trays and equipment are stored. Maintains stock ensuring proper rotation of products and proper usage by expiration date. The individual is required to maintain expiration dates of reagents throughout all/ any areas of the laboratory.
      • Receiving phlebotomy requests utilizing both manual and computerized logging methods.
      • Recollection of patient specimens when specimen quantity or quality does not meet the testing requirements.
      • Collection of additional samples as required for the purpose of performing additional requested testing.
      • Preparation of samples for shipment to referral laboratories including all required paperwork; some may require the use of a highly technical computer system
      • Performs various procedures with the computer system to include: Prints collection lists and labels, verifies specimens collected on collection lists, looks up patient laboratory orders, accessions laboratory orders, reprints labels, and prints a patient schedule.
      • Packages specimens for shipment following all OSHA regulations
      • Completes a shipping log by filling in all necessary information of the log.
      • Performs a variety of filing duties to include the specimen shipping log daily.
      • Scans reference laboratory results into CPRS GUI, Vista Imaging
      • Trains new employees and nursing personnel in the phlebotomy and specimen processing area
      • Follows and applies all Joint Commission, College of American Pathologists, American Association for Blood Banking and OSHA standards as applicable.
