There are 2 part-time positions for an experienced RN to provide leadership and management expertise as a Nurse Officer of the Day (NOD) on a rotating tour of duty at the Loch Raven Campus Community Living Center. The NOD acts as a resource to the nursing staff, responds in emergency situations, interprets VAMHCS policies and medical center standard operating procedures, maintains a productive relationship with other disciplines and administrative staff, and is responsive to the needs of the patients and their families. The NOD identifies and reports issues related to nursing practice to the respective Nurse Managers. The NOD participates in the development of staff, through the presentation of quarterly in-services (unit based educational programs), as well as, informal teaching and mentoring. The NOD identifies training needs of the staff on off tours, and explores methods to meet these needs. He/she assists with orienting new personnel. The NOD ensures a safe work environment for staff through proper guidance in safe work practices, and ensures that appropriate technology is in place for the provision of care. He/she works to maintain positive Labor Management relations by resolving work-related issues in a win-win manner that maximizes the achievement of organizational goals. The NOD promptly and effectively identifies staff performance and conduct issues, and initiates actions in a timely manner to resolve issues in collaboration with the Nurse Managers. He/she actively supports Diversity throughout the VAMHCS. The NOD supports the Worker's Compensation process by identifying and eliminating unsafe work practices or conditions. In addition, the NOD completes required documentation relative to employee injury in the computerized program, expeditiously and in accordance with VAMHCS policy. He/she promotes a work environment that demonstrates respect for all employees by ensuring that subordinates are accorded fair and equitable treatment in accordance with VAMHCS policy. The NOD actively participates in meetings and conferences with Nurse Managers/Associate Chief Nurses to resolve patient care issues.
Work Schedule: Part time - 12 hour and 8 hour weekend shifts, holidays and some week day shifts.

The VA Maryland Health Care System (VAMHCS) is a Level I tertiary multi campus teaching facility affiliated with the University of Maryland, School of Medicine and over 100 educational institutions. The VAMHCS consists of the acute care Baltimore facility; the multibuilding Perry Point campus with acute medicine, mental health and long term care; the Loch Raven campus with long term care; and six urban and rural outpatient clinics.
