Advanced Medical Support Assistant (MSA) in the Portland VA Medical Center, Dental Service work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model (analogous to Primary Care's patient aligned care team).
Each dental patient aligned care team (DPACT) includes one attending dentist (assigned as the primary dental provider), one Hygienist, 1.5 FTEE dental assistants, and one Advanced MSA who serves as the administrator, coordinator, and primary point of contact for the team's Veteran patients.
The purpose of the Advanced MSA is to determine dental eligibility; coordinate and maximize patient care within the DPACT, between the various sections of Dental(General Dentistry, Maxillofacial Prosthodontics, Prosthodontics, Periodontics, Endodontics, Oral Surgery, Hygiene, Dental Lab), other VA Dental Services, the Homeless Program/Mental Health Division, Liver Transplant, Surgery, and non-VA dentists/dental offices as part of Non-VA Coordinated Care.
Develops/maintains effective and efficient communication with Veterans, DPACTs, VA medical centers, and outside agencies (dental offices, dental schools, contract dental labs, etc). Incumbent assists DPACT with communications during the arrival/dismissal/and appointments of Veterans. Communicates with non-VA dental offices to ensure seamless Non-VA Coordinated Care. Incumbent facilitates/processes secure messaging with Veterans, and members of DPACT as needed. Incumbent develops and manages tracking systems for follow-up care such as periodic recall exams, hygiene appointments, and other recurring dental care. Receives patients and visitors in person or telephonically. Records and relays messages and/or redirect calls as necessary. Incumbent refers urgent messages and patient information for immediate action. Obtains identifying information and determines the nature of the visit/call. As Dental has unique VA eligibility requirements, incumbent ensures eligibility for care and contacts appropriate staff member for verification, when necessary. Outlines dental care benefits to which the patient has entitlement and answers questions provides information, gives guidance and initiates corrective eligibility action as appropriate. Incumbent participates daily in DPACT huddles and in weekly Service-level meetings to manage and plan patient care. Monitors pre-appointment requirements to assure readiness for patient visit/procedure. Incumbent educates DPACTs about shared patients (those who receive care at multiple V As or those who have care in the community).
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
