Physical Demands: Although much of the time is spent in the office, the incumbent also spends significant time in the field supervising preservation projects, monitoring contracts, and conducting training. Work is performed in, on and about deteriorating historic structures, which may be hazardous. Personal protective equipment is required. Incumbent may be subject to soiling from dirt and lubricants, and may be exposed to hazardous materials, high noise levels, dust and fumes, insect and snake bites, cuts and bruises and Hantavirus. The field trips will involved potentially hazardous proximity to heavy construction equipment such as trucks, cranes, tractors and earth moving equipment, trenching and drilling equipment and sand blasting operations and frequently requires off the ground work on ladders, scaffolds and structural framework or work in excavations, under buildings and trenches. Special safety precautions are required. The trips may require travel by boat, in adverse weather conditions. Travel to and from the islands requires riding on boats, fixed-wing aircraft or helicopter; boat transportation involves transferring from a moving boat to a stationary pier and vice versa.
