The Emergency Department Mental Health social work psychiatric liaison works as the only social worker in the ED, providing rotating coverage from 7 am through 11:30 7 days a week, including weekends and holidays. The social worker represents the entire mental health clinical center in practice and is part of the ED team, including physicians, nurses, health technicians, nurse practitioners, physician's assistants, and MAS staff. The social work psychiatric liaison consults on all Veterans who present to the ED with acute psychiatric and/or life threatening concerns such as suicidal and homicidal ideation, florid psychosis, substance dependence and withdrawal, as well as non-acute mental health symptomology. The social work psychiatric liaison completes a full psychiatric assessment on patients consulted to mental health and works in conjunction with the attending psychiatrist who makes a determination if psychiatric admission is warranted. The social worker psychiatric liaison works to arrange and facility admissions when warranted, which could include coordination of transfer to an outside facility when the VAMHCS has no open psychiatric beds. The ED social work psychiatric liaison also serves as back up social work coverage for the inpatient unit, completing inpatient documentation when there is low/no social work staff on the unit. There may be other duties as assigned or required.
