The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) Surgical Service is recruiting a General Surgery Nurse Practitioner (NP). The General Surgery NP is a professional nurse with advanced clinical knowledge and competence to provide professional assessment, management, coordination, and planning of multiple health care services. S/he is accountable for the management and evaluation of patients under his/her care. The NP will report directly to the Clinical Director of General Surgery, who reports to the Chief of Surgery. S/he holds clinical privileges and practices in collaboration with multidisciplinary staff. Clinical core privileges include: the management, treatment, and ordering, performing, and interpreting labs, radiography, and other diagnostic tests for acute and chronic medical conditions in an adult general peri-surgical population. Where a diagnosis is not clear or treatment does not result in expected outcome, consultation is required. The General Surgery NP performs initial histories and physical examinations on new inpatients and outpatients. The NP independently review initial history and physical examinations for patients admitted to or discharged from the hospital. The General Surgery NP assists and mentors the surgical residents in the delivery of care to assigned patients. The General Surgery NP screens outpatients to determine the need for further health care and/or admissions follows national guidelines and processes to execute core clinical privileges. The incumbent may request additional delineated privileges per Credentialing and Privileging policy and regulation. Specific delineated privileges: incision and drainage (I&D) and sharp wound debridement. The General Surgery NP prescribes and dispenses medication in accordance with the Arizona Board of Nursing Practice Act, Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) policies, and the Drug Enforcement (DEA) Act. S/he may prescribe non-controlled drugs. Schedules II controlled substance may be prescribed once with no refills of the prescription; Schedules III and IV controlled substance may be prescribed a maximum of five refills in six months, and Schedule V controlled substance may prescribe refills for a maximum of one year. DEA registration is required.
