The cardiology section of the Department of Medicine of VA Boston Healthcare System West Roxbury Campus is currently recruiting for one full-time Nurse Practitioner position.
The incumbent will perform duties that are associated with the cardiology EP section that will include:
- Management of an outpatient pacemaker-defibrillator clinic
- Inpatient and outpatient arrhythmia consultation
- Inpatient device checks
- Discharges for patients admitted by EP
- Assisting with alerts in remote monitoring of cardiac implantable devices
- Interpretation of ECG, CXR and device tracings
- Refill of anti-arrhythmics, cardiac medications and anticoagulants
- Point of contact for patient phone calls regarding arrhythmia and device issues
- Assessing risks in device advisories
- Fluent feedback communication with referring health care provider
- Consult triage and making arrangements for scheduling outpatient EP procedures including Pre-op testing
- Discharge, patient teaching and follow-up care, anticoagulation use and INR monitoring
The VA Boston Healthcare System, the largest consolidated facility in VISN 1, encompasses 3 main campuses and 6 outpatient clinics within a 40-mile radius of the greater Boston area. The consolidated facility consists of the Jamaica Plain Campus, the West Roxbury Campus, located on the Dedham line; and the Brockton Campus. In addition to the 3 main medical centers, 6 Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs). This role will be located at the West Roxbury Campus.

- The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will recommend the grade and salary for new appointments. For internal selectees being promoted, the board will determine grade and HR will determine step in accordance with policy.

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.A nurse practitioner must be licensed or otherwise recognized as a nurse practitioner in a State, possess a master's degree from a program accredited by the NLNAC or CCNE, and maintain full and current certification as a nurse practitioner from the American Nurses Association or another nationally recognized certifying body. [The certification must be in the specialty to which the individual is being appointed or selected.]Nurse Practitioners and Clinical Nurse Specialists are Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) who are masters degree-prepared registered nurses who also possess advanced clinical certification. They function within a scope of practice (SOP), rather than a position description, commensurate with their training, experience, and licensure. An APN functions autonomously within her or his own defined SOP in a variety of settings, such as hospital inpatient, outpatient clinics, nursing home, domiciliary, or patient's home. Competitive levels should be established using the basic CL criteria, including APN pay levels: Nurse I, II, III, IV, and V
The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
- Nurse I Level III - A Master's degree in nursing (MSN) and no additional nursing practice/experience.
- Nurse II - A Master's degree in nursing and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
- Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.
Cardiology experience with performance that demonstrates the use of sound clinical judgment in decision making.
