    The Department of Defense General Counsel serves in a dual-capacity, as the Chief Legal Counsel and as the Director, Defense Legal Services Agency. Legal services are provided to the Secretary and Deputy Secretary of Defense as well as direction and coordination of the activities of the legal staffs of the Department who provide the full range of legal services to officials of the Secretary of Defense, Defense Agencies, and DoD Field Activities.

    Your typical work assignments may include the following:

    • Serves as a Summer Intern in the Office of Counsel providing assistance to the work of the legal staff. Performs legal research for a variety of legal problems in assigned areas of responsibility of the Office of Counsel.
    • Performs research involving legal questions or factual situations where well-established or easy determinable facts and clearly applicable precedents are involved. Personally conducts research involving the Constitution of the United States, the United States Code, discussions of the United States Supreme Court and superior courts and administrative agencies, as well as pending legislation, policies, procedures, regulations, technical manuals and other agency publications.
    • Prepares memorandums or reports outlining the facts and legal issues involved, explaining the application of legal principles and precedents, and justifies recommendations or conclusions.
