    This is the position of IT Specialist (Systems Administrator) in the High Energy Division of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The employee will perform all aspects of computer system management for the Solar/Stellar X-ray Group (SSXG).

    1. Unix systems management (Linux/Solaris/MacOS). This includes allocation of system resources such as disk, CPU, and memory, creation of user accounts, email, printing and responding to user questions/requests. Monitor use of resources to limit LAN access to only currently authorized personnel. Conduct studies relating to SSXG computing needs. Recommend and implement system changes relating to SSXG computing needs and performance including system backup and recovery strategy, LAN performance, optimization of system resources (disk, CPU, memory), application evaluation, writing utilities such as shell scripts to provide LAN resource information to users, and others as required by supervisor. 

    2. Responsible for LAN security by staying abreast of Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) advisories, vendor-supplied security problems and fixes, and SI security standards. Recommends and implements security improvements and security problem resolutions. Interfaces with manufacturers of hardware and software to provide up-to-date information on available products. This includes review of commercial products and public domain utilities. Interfaces with manufacturers as a point of contact for maintenance of the LAN, both with respect to hardware and software. Coordinates with other CfA IT support groups. 

    3. Responsible for all aspects of server management of the SSXG LAN including: allocation of system resources, operation of LAN, maintenance of hardware and software, backups, installation of new hardware and software, and monitoring assigned licenses and service agreements. 

    4. Serve as point of contact for SSXG computer users requiring assistance or instruction in the use of the SSXG LAN. 

    5. Perform other related duties as assigned, such as, but not limited to:

      1. Responsible for installation and maintenance of server and client software for use in conjunction with current operating system versions. Manage server and client configuration to optimize performance and provide high availability.

      2. Work with current NetApp-brand infrastructure to provide appropriate resources to users.

      3. Work to expand use of technologies like system virtualization, remote console and clustering to make better use of assets.

      4. Work with mission teams to develop critical pipeline infrastructure and ensure good uptimes. Respond in a timely manner to mission-critical problems and coordinate with mission leaders.

      5. Support specific projects and research topics by researching and/or developing hardware or software solutions.
